The Relationship Of Car Insurance Quotes And Groups

By Alex Dunn

Fact - the make and model of your current car or your new car will largely have an effect on the car insurance quotes that you are able to obtain, whether high or low. This is hardly an obscure fact because most people know it, but what they do not know is that this effect is all part of a grouping system.

According to The AA, there are 20 insurance groups that your car could fit into, but there are actually around 50 groups now as a result of the amount of high performance cars that are produced and the relative expense associated with them.

Car insurance groups and car insurance groups are closely related and can elevate or lower your premiums according to the make and model. For example a Vauxhall Corsa or a Ford Fiesta will have much lower premiums attached to them because they are affordable cars. However, a Zonda would not. As an exclusive performance car, any owner should expect to pay through the nose for it. The latter is definitely in the high premiums band with the previous two examples being at the opposite end of the table.

Even if you try to estimate how much you would have to pay for car insurance when you get a new car, you will rarely ever be able to guess to close to the mark, unless you did a little research that is. The groups will give you an idea of the level of the quotes you will get because the lower the group, the lower your premium will be. At least, that is the general rule.

The car insurance group structure is based on a number of factors that affect how likely you are to claim and how much the insurer would have to pay out in order to repair or replace your car. The general rule is the higher the risk and cost, the higher the group, which will in turn put your car insurance premiums up.

There are several factors taken into account when it comes to placing an individual car in a group. Many of the factors you will be aware of. For example, car insurance quotes reflect the grouping number; in that the cost to replace a car when new, the overall cost of repairs and the performance of the car are all taken into account. The latter factor incorporates the acceleration, the top speed and the image of the car.

However, there are a few factors that many drivers do not think about, such as the shell of the car and how readily available and cost effective a new one would be. In fact, the more difficult it is to get a hold of parts, the more expensive your car insurance quotes will probably be.

It is worth bearing in mind though that car insurance companies are a law to themselves, meaning that they can choose to disregard the groups completely if they like. Although most follow them, some do not so you may be in for a surprise some way down the line.
