Save Cash Get Better Auto Insurance Quotes!

By Susan Tanner

The cost of driving an automobile in California can be prohibitive without a cheap auto insurance quote, and, in a recession, finding a better way to get a car insurance quote can be one of the best things one can do to save money.

While it may seem like a simplistic suggestion, shopping around before buying really is the easiest and most important way to ensure that one is getting best deal possible on car insurance. Many consumers renew their policies automatically without comparison shopping, or simply call the first company for which they see an advertisement. Careful planning can really help to find a better car insurance quote.

Once you get the cheapest rate, you should also make sure it's from a legitimate source, too. If you can't get reliable references from friends, family members or co-workers, check the Internet for reviews and experiences, and contact your local business bureau to ensure that you're dealing with a reputable outfit.

Be organized. Write down your information (the make, model, and year of your car; your address; a brief summary of the accidents or tickets you've had in the past 10 years; and any special safety features that your car has on it) in an easy-to-read format, and have it with you while researching policies or speaking with insurance agents. Doing this right from the start will help you to make sure that you don't forget anything.

While you'll certainly be aware of most of this information without having it in writing, such a list will help you remember all the things you need to be sure to mention when on the phone or meeting in person with an agent. After all, you'll only get quotes that are truly comparable across agencies if you're providing the same information to each agent.

Also, insurers sometimes offer special deals to drivers who make certain allowances. For example, you may be able to reduce your policy cost substantially, by only driving on weekdays, since the majority of accidents happen on the weekends. It's important to remember to ask each agent with whom you speak if such deals are available.

Other commonly discardable coverage options include towing services, glass, and collision. If you belong to an auto club or an incentive towing service program from your car's dealership, for example, remembering to tell the agent to delete tow coverage can reduce cost of your policy by quite a lot. In general, if you don't have to have it, delete it - and save!

Lastly (it can't be overstated how important this is) get quotes in writing before making decisions! Otherwise you may end up choosing one supplier based on a price you expect to receive, only to see extra terms and conditions on the final forms. Quotes can also differ in their fine print terms and conditions, so be sure to compare details before making your selection. There's nothing wrong with getting quotes over the phone or by visiting various offices, but before you actually compare those quotes and make your choice, be sure you've got them in writing.

Saving on your car insurance can help substantially when it comes to being able to afford the essentials of life, especially during this rough economic period. Following the above suggestions will aid you in your search for a car insurance quote that better fits your budget. And, if you save enough on car insurance, you might even be able to buy enough gasoline to actually go somewhere!
